Do Strategy Games Really Work on a Phone?
I used to be a skeptic. Strategy is a genre that grew up on mouse and keyboard, and squeezing it onto a touchscreen sounded like a compromise waiting to go wrong. Then Iron Dominion changed my mind.
The key, it turns out, is designing for the screen instead of porting to it. Iron Dominion uses larger tiles, clear unit icons, and a tap-to-confirm system that stops you from fat-fingering a move you didn't mean. It never made me miss a mouse.
What still trips up a lot of mobile strategy games is information density. On a small screen you can't show everything at once, so good games let you tap for details on demand rather than burying you in it. When that's done right, thinking on a phone feels natural.
My conclusion: strategy absolutely works on mobile, but only when the developers respect the format. Iron Dominion is proof it can be done, and I'd love to see more games learn from it.
